Let's Talk / Uncategorized / Effects on your hair during the menopause – Weekend Blog 19th I have blogged before about the changes I have noticed to my hair and the benefits of using Nioxin shampoo and conditioner. As I was running low recently I ordered my large bottles from justmylook.com as usual but by mistake I ordered the no.6 versions which is for advanced thinning hair. As I had bought them I decided to try it anyway, what I love about the no.6 version is the conditioner, it leaves my hair feeling much more silky so from now on I will be ordering this. Unfortunately most women in their 50’s will experience their hair losing its volume, this is because of the levels of oestrogen and progesterone dropping and the hair growing more slowly and becomes much thinner. It is almost certainly related to hormone changes so looking at alternative products and diet is certainly worth exploring. I have touched on the importance of diet during this time before, the menopause drains us of energy and vitamins and minerals, getting problems with your hair and nails can be a sign that you are a little bit nutritionally low in certain vitamins and minerals particularly iron and Vitamin D. A friend of mine and a follower of my blog, has been in touch with me to tell me of how helpful it has been to increase her fruit and veg intake to 10 a day (covered in a previous blog) she has found her weight has dropped and most importantly for her so has her waist size! Setting yourself a target of achieving 10 a day encourages you to snack less on the sugary options and eat more vegetables with meals. I find I am adding in at least 2 more vegetables with each evening meal now and discovering some new ways to cook them too, currently my favourite is the long stem broccoli which I cook for around 5 minutes in boiling water and then I quickly fry them in a small amount of olive oil and chilli flakes, and serve them as a side like you order in a restaurant. She also has tried Nioxin but it didn’t address one of the problems she had, which was a loss of her natural curls. She has now found a product that does help though called WOW Dream Coat for Curly Hair and for keeping her colour WOW Colour Coconut Cocktail, its available on Amazon. Thanks for sharing Alison.
